In a court mourning its fallen empire, young Queen Dowager Seo Ha-eun must publicly grieve for one hundred days to keep her late husband's title, his lands, and her imprisoned mother's life intact. Ha-eun performs every ritual flawlessly and can cry on command, yet she never loved the king she was married to for only forty-one days. When a note in the dead king's own hand accuses her of weeping the wrong number of tears, she follows the clue into the forbidden chamber behind the seventh veil and finds her husband alive, bound, watching her, and grading her sincerity. As the court punishes her smallest missteps and the hidden king rewards them, Ha-eun realizes she is trapped between two systems that both claim ownership of her. Her only act of defiance is to fail so convincingly that the right witness cannot look away.
